Anthony Joshua: No time to celebrate triumph over Andy Ruiz Jr

Shortly after Anthony Joshua’s dominant win over Andy Ruiz Jr, the two-time heavyweight champion of the world insisted he would not spend all that long celebrating.
The 30-year-old has business to attend to as he sets out to become the heavyweight king in 2020, with mega bouts against Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder targeted for the WBA, WBO and IBF champion.
And AJ has been seen putting in the hard yards at the gym only four days after his victory in Saudi Arabia, before tucking into a calorie-heavy meal after a tough workout.
The Olympic champion’s strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, posted to his Instagram footage of AJ performing shoulder rolls on Wednesday night, while other members of his entourage hit the weights.
The rigorous gym session was shortly followed by a big meal for the team, with meat, salad and pasta on the menu for the heavyweight champion.Joshua opted to cut down on the carbs before his rematch with Ruiz Jr, in a bid to come in lighter and better conditioned to last the full 12 rounds against the Mexican.
And his plan worked a treat. AJ was elusive and boxed smartly for the full 12 rounds to leave The Destroyer chasing shadows and losing his grip on the heavyweight crown.
Joshua has since been ordered to face his mandatory challengers by the WBO and IBF. Oleksandr Usyk and Kubrat Pulev are therefore in pole position to secure a shot at AJ next Spring.

Omo Sexy remakes Nollywood, music industry into money machine

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is trying to reorganise Nollywood and Nigeria’s music industry to become a money-making machine for all the stakeholders as she staged an entertainment fair TEFFEST. Will she succeed?
International Business Times zeroes in on her effort in this feature by AFP:
Fake eyelashes fluttered, bespoke suits were on display and slick music videos played at the inaugural edition of The Entertainment Fair and Festival in Nigeria’s economic hub Lagos in late November.
But behind the glitter, the reality of the film and music sectors in Africa’s most populous nation can often be far less glamorous: wages are low, there are no social protections and copyright law is rarely enforced.
That comes despite the country boasting the second most productive film industry in the world and some of Africa’s biggest pop stars.
Hits by singers like Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido play non-stop on stations across the continent and Nollywood churns out some 2,500 movies each year.
Despite the successes, revenues from Nigeria’s entertainment and media sector in 2018 lagged well behind that of the continent’s other leading economic powerhouse South Africa at $4.5 billion compared to $9.1 billion, PwC said.
That difference is not down to output or demand as Nigeria produces more, exports more and has a domestic market of some 200 million people, four times bigger than South Africa.
Instead, industry insiders insist it is a problem of organisation.
South Africa has better systems for ensuring royalty payments for artists, stronger legal protections and more modern facilities such as film studios, concert venues and cinemas.
In a bid to help remedy the issues facing the industry, veteran Nollywood star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde came up with the first entertainment business fair, known as TEFFEST.
It is aimed at bringing together actors, singers, producers, insurers, lawyers and managers to better organise the sector.
“The entertainment industry has grown without structures, without a roof,” Jalade-Ekeinde, nicknamed “Omo Sexy”, told AFP.
“For decades, we were not taken seriously and the big corporation companies didn’t consider us.”
The situation has changed as the industry has grown and now companies like Netflix are looking to step up their involvement in Nollywood and international labels attempting to tap Afropop stars.
“We produced, we grew, we became something suddenly and now the corporate world is trying to understand how we work and how they can deal with us,” Jalade-Ekeinde, AKA “the Queen of Nollywood”, said.
But the problems riddling the industry means it is often difficult to invest.
“There is nothing to celebrate here,” said Efe Omoregbe, manager of singer 2Face and former board member of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), which was dissolved by the government due to an internal conflict.

Nigeria’s Kamaru Usman knocks out Colby Covington to retain UFC Welterweight title

Nigerian Kamaru Usman secured a dramatic late TKO against Colby Covington after a thrilling five-round war in the main event of UFC 245 in Las Vegas. The Nigerian Nightmare’ retains welterweight title after breaking Covington’s jaw.
Referee Marc Goddard stepped in at 4:10 of the final round – the fifth latest finish in UFC history – as Usman retained his welterweight title in a thrilling slugfest at the T-Mobile Arena. That made it 15 straight wins for Usman (16-1), who is now 11-0 in UFC.
At the time of the stoppage, one judge had it at 2-2, while one had it 3-1 for Usman, and another 3-1 for Covington, who fell to just his second loss in the promotion.
“This one is not just for me, this one is for the whole entire world right now,” Usman told Joe Rogan in the Octagon, after finally settling the score with the controversial, outspoken Covington.
Covington could barely stand to listen to Usman’s victory speech, charging out of the Octagon to the back as soon as the Nigerian’s hand was raised.
But even in defeat, “Chaos” established himself as one of the greatest fighters on the planet with an excellent display that will surely still see his stock rise.
It was an extremely close fight that could have gone either way had it gone the distance, as both men met in the middle of the Octagon and traded blows from start to finish, eschewing their world-class wrestling abilities in favour of an all-out brawl.
But Covington’s fortunes changed when Usman broke his jaw at the end of the third round with a hard right.
“I wasn’t aware [of the broken jaw], I was catching him with some left hooks,” Usman said.
“I made a lot of mistakes tonight. I know I hit way harder than him. I’m gonna keep improving and give you guys a show each and every time.”
Indeed, while Usman was hitting harder and picking his shots, Covington was trying to overwhelm the champion with striking volume.
WE'LL GO TO COURT TO STOP KISS DANIEL'S CONCERT, AGBAKOBA THREATENS.

Estranged record label of Kizz Daniel, G-Worldwide Entertainment (GWW), has vowed to frustrate the concert of the artiste slated for December 26 at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.
They disclosed this in Lagos on Friday through their lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).
Addressing journalists, Agbakoba vowed they were going to pursue the case instituted against Kizz Daniel. He said the move was to restore “faith” in contractual agreements in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
“We represent one of the largest labels and we are very unhappy that one of our artistes, Kiss Daniel, has run away,” Agbakoba said.
According to him, Kizz Daniel whose real name is Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe breached ‘a mandatory buy-out clause’ and infringed on the intellectual property rights of GWW.
Agbakoba said the ‘Pak N Go’ crooner signed a seven-year contract with G-Worldwide Entertainment on April 15, 2014. However, in November 2017, the artiste left the label and founded his own label, Fly Boy Inc. In May 2018, he changed his name from Kiss Daniel to Kizz Daniel.
The move prompted G-Worldwide to drag Kizz Daniel to court, asking for N500m as damages.
“We, as legal advisers to some of the people in the business (entertainment), we are going to play a strong and active role to promote the industry,” Agabkoba said.
“What we’re trying to do with this press conference is to call attention to the fact that this nonsense that our artistes or labels, can do what they like, will have to stop. And Kizz Daniel represents the living example of how the rules of the industry are not being followed.”
Agbakoba also said they were going to file a case to stop Kizz Daniel’s show, ‘Kizz Daniel Live In Concert’, scheduled for Boxing Day at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos.
“We’re going to apply for an injunction to stop the show because he is tied to us. And the matter is in court and the court has to decide.”
Comparing the $7bn UK football industry to Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Agbakoba said: “The football rules are so strong that in Europe if you mess up, you’re in trouble. In Nigeria, they are so lax. So, we’re using this as a test case. “
Explaining his interest in the case against Kizz Daniel, Agbakoba said it is to rescue the Nigerian creative industry and make it grow.
“It is in the interest of artistes and labels to work together to create a strong framework for business to thrive. When you go play in a stadium or in a venue, you know that all your rights have been given to you. So, that is why we’re saying, next year, we’re going to take strongest possible measures against Kizz Daniel.
“Part of what we want to do is to strengthen legal framework around creative industry. So that you will know that if you enter into a contract, it is a contract.”
Agbakoba also warned third-parties to stay away from Kizz Daniel, citing that he is still legally bound to the contract he signed with GWW.
“It would not be in their interest to touch him until the court resolves the case,” he said.
“We are warning all third party people to stay away and let the court give its judgement, one way or the other.”
Agbakoba however, noted that his client is ready for out-of-court settlement.
Meanwhile, according to reports, in October, Kizz Daniel’s lawyer, Oluwaseye I. Lawal, disputed all the allegations.
The next hearing for the case is slated for January 21, 2020 at the Lagos High Court

WEEKEND PICKS (SELECT TWO)

WEEKEND PICKS (SELECT ONE)

Omoyele Sowore

More American lawmakers continue to raise concern over the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore, a political activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters.
The Nigerian presidency, wary of international criticisms, accused foreign governments of interfering in Nigeria’s affairs by questioning Mr Buhari’s respect for the rule of law.
A presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, on Wednesday asked foreign countries to stop interfering in Nigeria’s affairs, especially on the issue of human rights abuses.
He disclosed this while reacting to reports from the EU, UK and the U.S. that they were concerned about Nigeria’s disrespect for the rule of law including in its treatment of Mr Sowore.
However, many foreign lawmakers continue to criticise the Nigerian government over the re-arrest and detention of Mr Sowore on treason charges by the State Security Services (SSS).
He was arrested on August 3 for planning a #RevolutionNow protest against poor governance. He spent over 100 days in detention alongside his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, despite two court orders mandating their release much earlier.
The duo were released a day before their court hearing last Friday. But the SSS operatives invaded the courtroom to re-arrest the political activist.
The activities of the secret police already sparked nationwide furore and international criticism against Mr Buhari’s government.
On Tuesday, Chris Coons, a U.S. senator spoke out about Mr Sowore’s re-arrest. Mr Coons is the Vice-Chair of the Senate Ethics Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations.
He said in a tweet that he is “concerned that this case is representative of closing of political and media space in Nigeria. Civil society leaders and human rights defenders should be celebrated, not persecuted, in Nigeria and around the world.”
“I’m deeply concerned by the harassment and repeated detainment of Nigerian activist, journalist, and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. I urge Nigerian security services to respect due process and the rule of law, release Sowore per his bail terms, and launch an investigation into his re-arrest.”
Again on Thursday, a senator from New York, Chuck Schumer, asked Mr Buhari to honour previous court rulings. He also expressed dissatisfaction over Mr Sowore’s continued detention.
“I am disheartened by reports that Omoyele Sowore—activist, journalist, American citizen—was re-arrested by Nigeria’s government. President Buhari should heed the previous court rulings, and international sentiment, and immediately free Omoyele Sowore now.”
Before now, PREMIUM TIMES reported how Bob Menendez, a member of the United States Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee and Josh Gotthiemer wrote to the Nigerian ambassador in the U.S., Sylvanus Nsofor, over the continuous detention of the political activist.
In the letter dated November 25 and made available to PREMIUM TIMES, the congressmen said there have been a number of troubling reports about Nigeria’s security agencies assaulting and detaining journalists. Mr Menendez in another video and public statement promised US intervention over the case.
Also, in October, a member of the United States House of Representatives, Karen Bass, said the act of the DSS to Mr Sowore violates a “fragment of his fundamental human right”.
Apart from Mr Sowore, the Nigerian government is also illegally detaining many others including a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki and the Shiite leader, Ibrahim El Zakzaky.

According to popular blog, Gistlovers, the duo welcomed their son for a while now but Kiss Daniel insisted that his Baby mama keeps the news on a ‘low key’.
Recall that the report of the lady’s pregnancy for Kiss Daniel surfaced on social media some months ago, with the duo denying the speculations and stating that the news is false.
The fashion stylist and baby mama to Kizz Daniel also deactivated her Instagram account at the time to avoid being trolled on social media.
Well, Currently it appears that the baby has arrived and it is a boy. Posh Merald also posted a photo which to an extent, has confirmed the speculation.

Juve, the Ronaldo-Higuain-Dybala trio can and must be used by Sarri

Maurizio Sarri knows that it's a winning concept. It's an idea that teases him. The Ronaldo-Higuain-Dybala trio has shown their quality so many times before, but rarely been used for a longer period of time. After yesterday's display against Bayer Leverkusen, it might be time.
In many ways, it's long overdue, given how different the Bianconeri look with those three on the pitch. Furthermore, the manager wouldn't have to explain much to them, just the classic 'enter the pitch and have fun' would work with those players.
Certainly, they have entertained the Juventus fans: together they have scored 22 goals and assisted an additional 13 goals since the start of the season. When on the pitch together, they always try to link. More often than not, they are successful as they understand each other.
In the 66th minute against Leverkusen, Dybala entered the pitch and less than 10 minutes later, he had assisted Ronaldo for the opener. Another 20 minutes passed, and then the Argentine assisted Higuain as well. In other words, the trio changed the outcome of the game.
For Sarri, a tough decision now awaits, as he knows that the Juventus environment wants to see the trio. Furthermore, it's no longer a question of possibility, because the trio can be done.

‘A Decade Ago, It Wasn’t Cool To Be An African But Now It Has All Changed’ – Davido

Award-winning Nigerian music superstar, Davido in a recent interview has indicated that a decade ago, it wasn’t too cool to be an Africa.
According to him, the attention is now on Africa referencing the success of artists such as Burna Boy and Wizkid, as well as his own.
During his interview, he said;

“The world is changing, people, especially younger people, are more open-minded. Ten years ago it wasn’t cool to be African, but now it’s cool, everybody accepts us.
There’s also the obvious fact that, in the social media era, it’s become easier to access art from all over the world. You don’t have to wait for a song to get played on TV or radio, you can upload something and people will find it.”

ANCELOTTI GOOD ENOUGH TO WORK ANYWHERE AFTER NAPOLI SACKING - LAMPARD

The Italian manager has been backed to bounce back after parting ways with his Serie A side
Frank Lampard believes Carlo Ancelotti has the ability coach any side in the world after Napoli sacked the experienced Italian on Tuesday.
Ancelotti was dismissed three hours after leading the club to a 4-0 victory over Genk, which confirmed their place in the Champions League knockout rounds.
Poor results in Serie A and rumours of discontent at Stadio San Paolo had placed pressure on the ex-Milan head coach for a number of weeks at Everton and Arsenal have already emerged and Blues boss Lampard, who played under Ancelotti at Stamford Bridge, suggested the 60-year-old would have no trouble finding another high-profile position.
Artic have huge respect for him, I am very sorry for him," Lampard said after Chelsea's win over Lille.
"I know it was a tough job for him lately. I saw his interview before the game and I thought it was a very typically classy interview in what seemed a very tough time for him. He always handles himself brilliantly.
"I think he can work anywhere in the world at the top level, of course."
Ancelotti is a three-time Champions League winner as a coach and boasts league titles in ItalyGermanyFrance and England, but his most recent jobs have produced mixed results.
He spent just over 18 months in charge of Napoli and leaves with the club sitting seventh in Serie A.
Former Partenopei player Jorginho said: "I didn't know about it. I'm really sorry. I never met him but I heard a lot of good things about him from my former team-mates.
"They told me he is a great man and manager. I'm sorry for everything that is happening in Napoli. It's a difficult moment for them.
"I hope that they will be back at the top as they were for years until this bad moment. I'm really surprised. I was not expecting Napoli [to have] trouble and I'm sorry, because I'll always love Napoli."
Napoli are expected to name Gennaro Gattuso as Ancelotti's replacement
